Physiotherapy for Caesarean

A caesarean birth, otherwise known as a c-section, is the delivery of the baby through the incision of the mother’s abdomen and uterus. The body heals this type of incision by laying down scar tissue. Scar tissue is made up of collagen, the building blocks of body tissue. The quality and mobility or scar tissue is initially inferior to normal tissue mainly due to stiffness arising from adhesions in the scar tissue. Common symptoms arising from a caesarean scar are pain, sensitivity and a lack of mobility in the abdomen. Physiotherapists are highly trained to help accelerate the healing stage of scarring and can effectively reduce scar sensitivity, improve mobility and rehabilitate women to movement without discomfort.

Women who have had a c-section often think they don't need to worry about their pelvic floor or core because they haven't had a vaginal birth. However, scarring often has a detrimental effect on core activation and the pelvic floor has still had to carry a baby for nine months! The dreaded "overhang" that often occurs following a caesarean can be caused by a combination of a weak core/pelvic floor and poor scar healing. This can be improved with Physiotherapy. Whilst seeing a Physiotherapist face to face is always the ideal, it is not always possible - perhaps due to work schedules, childcare or finances. For these women an online recovery programme is the perfect compromise.
